"Our fellowship is focused, founded, and built on God's revealed Word to us: in the person of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord; and through God's inspired written Word, the Bible. It is our joy to extend to you, your family, and friends a personal invitation to participate in the life and activities of Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church.
History of JABC

Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church members are proud to be a part of a fellowship that has been serving our Savior for over 60 years in East Point, GA. It all began with a vision and six faithful followers of Christ.

In January 1945 , while the world was still at war and the Jefferson Park area in East Point was being developed, the need for a church in the neighborhood was discussed.  A short time later, others joined this group and on March 11, 1945, the organizational meeting was held at the Harris Street Elementary School, (which is the current location of part of Tri-Cities High School).  Before the first Sunday in May, there were 155 members (the official Charter Members). Meetings were held both in homes and at the school until Easter Sunday.  The composition of members came from multiple denominations, all feeling led by God to minister to the Jefferson Park area.

In 1946, the land was purchased at 1150 Jefferson Ave and construction began on what is now the current Fellowship Hall. It was only one solid stone level in which they had their first services on April 21st of that same year.

In 1952, construction was complete on the sanctuary, directly above the current meeting location. This new facility was dedicated in 1957 at the same time ground was broken on the final phase, the educational wing. When viewed from above, this completed construction completes the image of a cross.

Over the years, more land was acquired, and today the church owns the entire block.. The only house left on this property has a history of its own within its walls. Currently being used as our Mission House, the church offers the building for missionaries, and other workers of Christ to stay as long as needed.

In the 63 years of existence there have been seven pastors:

  • Paul Meigs (1945 - 1951)
  • Wendell Grigg 1952 - 1953)
  • Roy Hinchey(1954 - 1971)
  • David York(1972 - 1975)
  • Henry Hulgan (1976 - 1995)
  • Bill Rittenhouse(1996)
  • Darwin Caldwell(1997- present)

There were others for short times serving as interim pastors while the church searched for a full-time leader. One interim pastor was Clarence Jett, who is our current Pastor Emeritus and still a member of the church.

JABC's years of history are rich and colorful.  They tell a story of faith, of work, or joy and of sorrow.  But most of all they show what a small group of Christians can do when they try.  And, we continue to try to meet the needs of the community.  We cannot predict the future, but it is our belief and prayer that the church at Jefferson Avenue and  Jefferson Terrace will go on serving for many years to come.  We invite all to come and be a part of our congregation.
